The Cult of The Flamboyant Potato is Strong in Sheffield

Unfamiliar with comedy genius John Robertson? You wont be for long. The undisputed cult leader of The Dark Room brought the house down at Area 51’s Sci-Fi Weekender X. A special ten year anniversary of the renowned convention that celebrates science fiction in all it’s elements. But this was a performance that transcended all others. So if you weren’t there, let us lay it out for you:

THE BRIAN BLESSED INTERVIEW

Anyone familiar with Brian Blessed (Aka Prince Vultan of Flash Gordon) knows his interviews are legendary. Perhaps more often than not, turning into a one man show of staggering proportions. Famed for his sheer volume, and incredible showmanship, his live interviews take uncontrollable tangents with amazing results. Combine this with the powerhouse of charisma that is John Robertson, the interview was turned swiftly into a double act. From comparing how similar an audience member was to Brians’ bollocks, to swearing at a five year old (not even like low level swearing…he straight up c-bombed that child!) no one was safe!

Eventually joined onstage by the amazing Sam J Jones (aka FLASH GORDON)! The trio tore the roof off the O2 Academy, followed by a greatly deserved standing ovation.

THE DARK ROOM COSPLAY AND JOHN ROBERTSON FANS … Sorry, DARRENS!

Cosplay forms a large portion of the Sci-Fi Weekender. Dressing up as your hero’s for fun because it’s the ultimate nod to a fandom is no small deal here. Usually, this is an honour reserved for well known films, tv series, comic books, video games and novels… but there are no limits to who you can be. As it turns out, The Dark Room has an affinity to a particular fruit, a joke immortalised in the show’s merchandise. A joke that has resonated so brilliantly with fans they’re incorporating the fruit into the very heart of the cosplays. And then,

Even the other acts got involved! Check out this fluffy homage to the Dark Room from fan Kirsty McNulty!

THE SCI-FI WEEKENDER ‘DARK ROOM’ SHOW

600 people gathered around the main stage for one of the conventions undisputed highlights. With more chanting than a protest, more anarchy than rock show, and more death than a Manson family pot-luck: The Dark Room destroyed the crowd. But then had them all on their feet applauding for more!

Standing ovation for Dark Room on the Main Stage

Rounding off an amazing show that had everyone howling with laughter and carried a 9-year-old boy into the heights of heroism (we see you Ethan!… how do we see you? We’re in a Dark Room.)

THE FINALE

Finally, joining in as a guest singer with Blues Harvest (because at this point, why not?) John gave a hilariously active rendition, if inaccurate rendition of ‘Johnny Be Good’. Check out the video below for what can only be described as ‘deafening bullshit’:

Johnny be… hyperactive.

So all up, an incredible weekend filled with complete madness and mayhem.

And guess what? It’s happening all over again at Sci-Fi Weekender PART 2!

Goodbye for now!
